In December, activists gathered in Bern to address the conflict between environmental protection and job creation in the palm oil industry. They emphasized the need for truly sustainable palm oil production, criticizing current practices in Indonesia and Malaysia that harm the environment and workers’ rights. The conference aimed to unite stakeholders along the supply chain for a just transition towards sustainability. Prominent voices included Dagmar Panca from the Indonesian trade union KPBI and Uli Arta Siagian from WALHI Indonesia, both advocating for integrated agricultural practices and better labor conditions.
