American and Dutch researchers have published findings indicating that the first alphabet dates back to 2,400 BCE, based on excavations in eastern Syria. They uncovered clay cylinders engraved with mysterious symbols at the site of Tell Umm-el Marra, suggesting that the emergence of the alphabet might have occurred 500 years earlier than previously thought.
