Ancient Ice Core Extraction in Antarctica Offers Insights into Climate History
Scientists have successfully extracted a 1.2 million-year-old ice core from Antarctica, the oldest known sample of its kind. This 2.8 km-long core contains ancient air bubbles that could help unravel climate mysteries related to glacial cycles and human survival. The international research team, led by the Italian Institute of Polar Sciences, faced extreme temperatures and challenging logistics over four summers to collect this vital data. Experts believe this project could extend our understanding of climate change by an additional 400,000 years.
