Ancient Volcanic Eruptions Discovered on Moon’s Far Side

Scientists have uncovered evidence of ancient volcanic activity on the far side of the Moon, with rock samples indicating eruptions dating back over 4 billion years. The findings, published in Nature and Science, stem from samples collected by China’s Chang’e-6 mission. Alongside basalt fragments, researchers identified a surprisingly young volcanic event occurring 2.83 billion years ago, a phenomenon not previously detected on the lunar near side. This study marks a significant advancement in lunar geology, broadening our understanding of the Moon’s geological history.
