Ancient Volcanoes Discovered on Moon’s Far Side

Researchers from the US and China have found evidence of volcanic activity on the Moon’s far side, revealing that eruptions occurred over 4.2 billion years ago. Analysis of samples from the Chang’e-6 mission uncovered basalt fragments, indicating a ‘surprisingly young’ eruption around 2.83 billion years ago—unlike any found on the near side. These findings, published in Nature and Science, mark a significant advancement in lunar geology and offer crucial insights into the Moon’s history. Professor Qiuli Li hailed the study as immensely valuable for lunar and planetary science.
