Archbishop Justin Welby to Continue Role in Church of England Until January
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will remain in his position until January 6, 2024, after resigning due to allegations surrounding his handling of child abuser John Smyth’s case. A review criticized Welby for failing to report Smyth, a prolific abuser. While he will minimize public engagements, he plans to fulfill select commitments before officially stepping down, when his duties will be temporarily assigned to the Archbishop of York. A report disclosed that Church officials were aware of Smyth’s abuse as early as 2013.
