Asia Commemorates 20 Years Since Devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami

Emotional ceremonies are held across Asia to honor the 220,000 victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which was triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia. Survivors from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand participate in memorials, with local rituals, a moment of silence, and commemorations for those lost, including many foreign tourists. Enhanced warning systems have been implemented since the disaster, which claimed more than 160,000 lives in Indonesia alone and reshaped regional dynamics, including a peace treaty in Aceh.
