Asylum System Under Strain: Half of Refugee Shelters to Be Occupied by Status Holders by 2026

Projections indicate that by 2026, over half of the residents in Dutch asylum centers will hold residence permits, totaling 54,000 out of 106,000. This growth highlights ongoing challenges in transitioning status holders to regular housing, exacerbated by a shortage of social rental properties. Municipalities struggle to meet government obligations to house these individuals, leading to a backlog of nearly 11,000. The current cabinet plans to remove housing mandates, raising concerns from the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) that this could prolong the asylum crisis and impede integration efforts.
