Award-Winning Photographer Anas Alharboutli Killed in Airstrike in Syria

Anas Alharboutli, a 32-year-old award-winning photojournalist for the German Press Agency (dpa), was killed in an airstrike near Hama while covering clashes between rebel groups and government forces in Syria. Fellow journalists confirmed his death, which occurred as he documented the advance of the radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Alharboutli, who began working as a photojournalist in 2015 and joined dpa in 2017, gained recognition for his powerful imagery from the Syrian Civil War, earning multiple international awards. dpa’s editor-in-chief Sven Gossan expressed deep sorrow over his passing.
