Bali Nine Drug Smugglers Return to Australia After Nearly 20 Years in Prison
Five members of the notorious ‘Bali Nine’ drug smuggling group have returned to Australia after serving almost two decades in Indonesian prisons. The group was initially arrested in 2005 for attempting to smuggle heroin. Following intense lobbying from the Australian government, the men expressed relief at being home, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged their serious offenses but deemed it time for their return. The case has highlighted Indonesia’s stringent drug laws and raised significant diplomatic tensions between Australia and Indonesia.
