BBC Chair Calls for End to Decade-Long Charter Review Cycle
Samir Shah, the chair of the BBC, has proposed eliminating the ‘odd’ 10-year charter renewal process, which he believes unnecessarily subjects the corporation to continuous government reviews. In his first major speech since taking office, Shah suggested that the BBC should have a permanent charter like other royal charter organizations, such as the British Council. The government, however, argues that regular renewals have supported the BBC’s effectiveness for a century. Discussions about the current charter’s future will continue as it approaches its expiration in 2027.
