Bern Convention Alters Wolf Protection Status in Europe

The Bern Convention has approved a change in the status of wolf protection from ‘strictly protected’ to ‘protected’ in Europe. The decision, made during a meeting in Strasbourg with representatives from 49 member states, aims to better protect livestock amid a rising wolf population, which has nearly doubled to 20,300 in the past decade. While farmers support the change for easier control of wolves, animal protection groups warn it poses a risk to the species.
