Boris Zürcher Reflects on Decade of Transformation in Swiss Labor Market

Boris Zürcher, head of the Swiss Federal Secretariat for Economic Affairs’ Labor Directorate, will step down at the end of 2024 after 11 years of overseeing labor market changes. Zürcher highlighted that the unemployment rate, which fluctuated around 3% when he began, currently stands at 2.5%. He emphasized key trends impacting the labor market, including demographic shifts, technological advancements, and increasing female participation. Furthermore, he noted the critical role of foreign workers in addressing labor shortages and stressed that Switzerland will continue to rely on immigration for economic growth.
