Bundestag Votes to Strengthen Protection of Federal Constitutional Court

The Bundestag has approved a significant amendment to the Basic Law to enhance the protection of the Federal Constitutional Court against political influence. The newly approved rules will be enshrined in the constitution, making them harder to change. A total of 600 lawmakers supported the measure, while 69 opposed it, surpassing the required two-thirds majority. The law, which focuses on the structure and terms of the court’s judges, must also receive approval from the Bundesrat to take effect. The move has drawn criticism from the AfD party, which feels targeted by the amendment.
