Celebrating 50 Years of Lynx Reintroduction in Jura: Lessons for Wolf Management

The Jura region commemorates the 50th anniversary of the lynx’s reintroduction, launched in 1974 in Neuchâtel. Yves Bongard, secretary of the ‘Avenir Loup Lynx Jura’ association, notes how perceptions have shifted from fear to admiration toward this apex predator. Today, around 300 lynxes thrive in Switzerland, with about 70 in Jura. Reflecting on the successful integration of lynxes, Bongard hopes for a similar reconciliation with wolves, urging better understanding of wilderness to manage conflicts. He acknowledges the lynx does impact livestock, but compensation exists, highlighting the need for balance in wildlife management.
