Celebrating Saint Barbara with Traditional Greek ‘Varvara’ Dish
On the occasion of Saint Barbara’s feast, the women’s volunteers of the Orestiada Folklore Museum prepared and distributed the traditional Thracian dish ‘Varvara’, which consists of boiled wheat with sugar, cinnamon, walnuts, and other local fruits. The preparation starts the night before and symbolizes good health as it is shared with loved ones. An educational workshop at the museum allowed children to learn about the dish’s significance, guided by cook Stella Papandasiou and featuring talks about Saint Barbara by Vera Mavridou and Father Panagiotis Savvopoulos.
