Celebrating Saint Matthew and Saint Iphigenia on November 16
On November 16, the Church honors Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, alongside Saint Iphigenia. Iphigenia, also known as Iphigenia of Ethiopia, dedicated her life to God under the guidance of Saint Matthew. The narrative recounts her defiance against King Hirtakos, who sought her hand in marriage. After failing to sway her, the king turned against Matthew, resulting in the apostle’s martyrdom. Despite Hirtakos’s efforts, Iphigenia’s steadfastness led to the eventual elevation of her brother as king, who promoted Christianity in the region. Both saints are commemorated together in the Orthodox Church.
