Celebrations of Theophany in Zakynthos: Tradition and Rituals
The island of Zakynthos celebrated Theophany, locally known as ‘Fotone’, with traditional rituals. The festivities began with a procession led by a band, clergy, and officials accompanying the Bishop from the Church of Saint Nicholas to the Metropolitan Palace. A unique aspect of the ceremony involved the Bishop blessing the Cross, which was raised on a long pole rather than thrown into the sea. Local customs included adorning home icons with bitter orange leaves and an orange, which is consumed on Clean Monday for throat relief.
