Challenges in Identifying the Disappeared in Syria Post-Assad Era
Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, highlights the enormous challenge of identifying thousands of Syrians who have gone missing since the fall of dictator Bashar al-Assad. Despite some progress in tracking cases, many families remain without news of their loved ones as efforts to uncover the fate of the disappeared are expected to take years. The CICR is collaborating with various organizations to gather data and support affected families, while Human Rights Watch urges the new Syrian authorities to preserve vital evidence for future criminal trials.
