Challenges of Voting Logistics Highlighted by Ireland’s Electoral Chief

Art O’Leary, the head of Ireland’s independent electoral commission, discussed voting logistics on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, emphasizing the complexities of using various polling locations, including primary schools. While attempts to hold votes on Saturdays were made, they resulted in lower turnout by 2%. O’Leary stressed the importance of voter registration, noting the fragmented nature of the electoral register across 31 jurisdictions. He called for improvements to both voter engagement and the accuracy of the registration system to better reflect the electorate in upcoming elections.
