Concerns Over Unregulated Child Care Arrangements Highlighted by HIQA Report

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) raised serious concerns regarding children living in unregulated special accommodation in Ireland. A ten-year analysis revealed a significant shortfall in suitable residential and foster placements, resulting in many children being placed in inappropriate settings. The report identifies an urgent need for improved capacity in alternative care services, as well as concerns about staffing shortages and social worker allocations. Chief Executive Officer Kate Duggan of Tusla emphasized the agency’s commitment to enhancing recruitment of foster carers to better serve children’s needs.
