Concerns Raised Over New Garda Disciplinary Regulations in Ireland

Garda associations in Ireland have criticized the Department of Justice for hastily implementing new disciplinary regulations they claim infringe on members’ rights and misclassify minor misconduct as major. The regulations, set to take effect next month, lack transparency, eliminate the right of appeal, and may jeopardize members’ human rights. The Garda Representative Association and Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors express fears that civilian involvement in garda proceedings is inappropriate due to existing structural disparities. The Department of Justice argues that a review is underway to enhance the garda discipline system.
