A significant conservation effort has successfully reintroduced 1,329 critically endangered Desertas Island land snails to their natural habitat on Bugio Island. After being bred in captivity at Chester Zoo, these tiny molluscs, previously thought to be extinct, were marked for monitoring and released as part of a species recovery plan. The initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to protect these unique snails from invasive predators that have previously threatened their existence.
