Contemporary Artists Design Tapestries for Notre-Dame Cathedral

Spanish artist Miquel Barceló and British artist Michael Armitage have been commissioned to create seven tapestries for Notre-Dame de Paris, aimed at enhancing the cathedral’s chapels. The tapestries will be handcrafted in France using techniques from renowned establishments like the Gobelins and Beauvais manufacturers. This ambitious project, which follows the cathedral’s restoration efforts post-2019 fire, is expected to take five to six years. In the interim, exceptional loans of tapestries by notable 20th-century painters will adorn the cathedral for its reopening on December 7-8.
