As COP 29 commences, the Amazon rainforest faces severe threats from illegal wildfires, which have devastated millions of hectares this summer. In September alone, Brazil recorded over 2,500 fires daily, equivalent to one-third of France’s area. This year’s total of 243,000 fires marks a 30% increase from 2023. Most of these events are linked to criminal activities, with a recent police operation leading to arrests related to a fire that burned 1,600 hectares for cattle grazing. Despite pledges from President Lula, budget cuts to environmental agencies persist, undermining efforts to protect biodiversity.
