Critical Environmental Situation in Russia Following Oil Tanker Sinkings
Russian authorities have declared a critical state following the sinking of two oil tankers in the Kerch Strait, leading to a significant oil spill. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized the negative environmental impact while urging maximum efforts to address the situation. The Crimean governor, Sergey Aksyonov, announced a state of emergency due to the oil leak, with around 40% of the 9,200 tons of fuel carried by the vessels spilled into the sea. Despite some cleanup efforts, concerns remain regarding potential new leaks from the sunken tankers.
