François-Xavier Bieuville, the prefect of Mayotte, has warned that the human toll from Cyclone Chido could reach several hundreds, possibly approaching a thousand or more. The cyclone has reportedly completely destroyed precarious housing, which affects about a third of the archipelago’s population of 320,000. Due to local customs of quick burials, obtaining a final death toll may be challenging. The local authorities have lifted the red alert as the cyclone is no longer deemed a threat.
