Czechia Expands Rights for Same-Sex Couples, But Marriage Remains Unattainable

Czechia has granted same-sex couples more rights, allowing them to register partnerships, adopt each other’s children, and share surnames. However, the full recognition of marriage remains absent after the parliament rejected a law supporting it. President Petr Pavel is in favor of equality, contrasting with his predecessor Milos Zeman’s opposition. The new regulations, while seen as progress, still leave significant gaps, particularly in adoption rights, as couples cannot adopt children from outside their family. Advocates continue to push for marriage equality in the country.
