Dáil Éireann Convenes for Historic First Session

The 34th Dáil Éireann convenes today, where members will elect a Ceann Comhairle and discuss the nomination of Mary Lou McDonald from Sinn Féin for Taoiseach. Although Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are refraining from nominating a Taoiseach today, a proposal to adjourn until January 22 has been set for a vote. The session marks a ceremonial occasion with new TDs, including the youngest member Eoghan Kenny, being sworn in. Verona Murphy is favored to be elected Ceann Comhairle with support from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael leaders.
