Daniel Ortega Proposes Constitutional Changes to Extend Power in Nicaragua
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is seeking to further consolidate his power by proposing amendments to the constitution. These changes include extending the presidential term from five to six years and redesignating the role of Vice President, currently held by his wife, Rosario Murillo, to ‘co-president’. The amendments aim to increase state control over the judiciary and media, amid heightened repression of political opposition. This marks the thirteenth constitutional alteration since Ortega resumed power in 2007, which has drawn international criticism and sanctions.
