Dark History of Forced Care and Adoptions in Nidwalden, Switzerland
Nidwalden’s historical treatment of the marginalized, including the forced placement of children and adults into institutions, is examined in a new book titled ‘Gegen das Vergessen’. It reveals how at least 60,000 individuals were subjected to coercive measures throughout Switzerland in the 20th century, primarily affecting those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The book also discusses the smaller role of such measures in Nidwalden compared to neighboring Luzern, where many children were forced to work on large farms. Historical insights are provided through photographs and accounts from that era.
