Denmark Introduces World’s First CO2 Tax for Farmers Amid Agricultural Reform
Denmark has become the first country to implement a CO2 tax for farmers as part of a new agricultural agreement aimed at addressing excess fertilizer and nitrogen issues. The tax will be introduced in two phases, reaching 40 euros per ton by 2035. Farmers, like Jesper Clausen, can sell nitrogen-rich land to the government as part of a larger initiative to convert agricultural land into natural areas, enhancing biodiversity and environmental protection. This reform follows Denmark’s ambitious climate goals established after the 2019 parliamentary elections, which prioritized climate and environmental issues.
