Devastating Impact of Cyclone Chido on Mayotte Revealed by Satellite Imagery
Satellite images have shown that at least 56% of buildings in northeastern Mayotte were destroyed or damaged by Cyclone Chido. As damage assessments continue, reports indicate that 70% of structures may be affected when including possibly damaged buildings. The Copernicus emergency program is conducting ongoing assessments to guide relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas, with significant destruction noted in Mamoudzou and Koungou. Official counts report at least 22 fatalities and 1,373 injuries, with fears of even higher casualties.
