Discovery of 6900-Year-Old Oak Rewrites History of Drenthe’s Peatlands

A remarkable discovery of a partially mummified 6900-year-old oak tree in the peatland near Dalerpeel challenges previous archaeological timelines. The Rijksuniversiteit Groningen confirmed the tree’s age, despite the high peat area being believed to have formed around 5000 years ago. The find, made during restoration work, raises new questions about the conservation of the tree and the historical origins of the peatland. Staatsbosbeheer is now assessing the possibility of preserving the tree for further research and exhibition.
