Discovery of Ancient Marble Statue Near the Acropolis

Archaeologists have uncovered a white marble statue representing a nude male figure in the guise of Hermes Ludovisi during gas pipeline installation work near the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens. The statue, discovered in a one-meter-wide trench, is in good condition and was part of a construction made of rectangular bricks. This area, rich in imperial-era urban villas, showcases the luxurious aesthetics of ancient Athens with its decorative mosaics and sculptures from renowned Neo-Attic workshops. The Athens City Archaeological Authority is ensuring the statue’s safe transfer to conservation laboratories.
