Discovery of Ancient Maya City ‘Valeriana’ in Mexico Shakes Archaeological Community
Researchers have discovered a massive, previously unknown Maya city named ‘Valeriana’ in Campeche, Mexico, which may have housed up to 50,000 people. Using LiDAR technology, archaeologist Luke Auld-Thomas from Tulane University revealed over 6,000 ancient structures, including pyramids and palaces, without traditional excavation methods. This finding challenges existing theories about Maya habitation patterns and suggests a highly urbanized society. The discovery not only sheds light on the ancient civilization but also offers potential insights for sustainable urban planning today.
