Emerging Antibiotic-Resistant Cholera Strain Detected in Mayotte
Researchers have identified a highly antibiotic-resistant strain of cholera in Mayotte, raising concerns about treatment options. The strain, first seen in Yemen in 2018 and later in Lebanon in 2022, has shown resistance to two of the three antibiotic classes typically used for treatment. Experts, including François-Xavier Weill from the Institut Pasteur, warn that further resistance could leave no effective alternatives for treatment, complicating cholera management significantly.
