Environmental Expert Calls for Monitoring Station Fund for Water Conservation in Greece
Professor Alexandra Gemitzis, an environmental engineer and globally recognized scientist, highlighted the urgent need for an environmental monitoring observatory in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Speaking at a climate change conference in Athens, she warned of significant water loss—8 million cubic meters annually—due to reduced snowfall, exacerbating water scarcity. She criticized local authorities for refusing financial support for necessary maintenance of meteorological stations, essential for weather data collection. Gemitzis urged regional officials from neighboring areas to collaborate on improving meteorological infrastructure for better water management.
