Escalating Gang Violence Forces Mass Exodus in Port-au-Prince
In Port-au-Prince, panic spread as hundreds of families fled from gangs that have taken control of critical neighborhoods in Haiti’s capital. The area of Solino fell to the ‘Viv Ansanm’ gang alliance, exacerbating fears among residents of nearby communities. The recent violence, which has resulted in over 700,000 displaced persons this year alone, coincides with ongoing political turmoil following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. New Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Émé has vowed to restore security and organize Haiti’s first elections since 2016 amid escalating gang-related fatalities and displacement.
