EU Allocates €300 Million for Joint Defense Purchases Amid Ukraine Crisis
On November 14, the European Union announced a historic allocation of €300 million to support 20 member states in procuring anti-aircraft defense systems, armored vehicles, and ammunition, primarily for Ukraine. This initiative marks the first time EU funds will directly aid member states in joint arms purchases from its budget, according to European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager. The investment aims to strengthen EU defense capabilities and enhance support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict, with a commitment to deliver at least one million artillery shells by March 2024.
