EU Countries Push for New Tobacco Tax Law Covering E-Cigarettes

Sixteen EU countries, led by the Netherlands, are urging the European Commission to propose a new tobacco tax law to include electronic cigarettes, which are currently not regulated under existing legislation. The countries argue that the lack of a unified tax approach has led to market distortions and varying national regulations. They stress that an updated law is essential to address these challenges and create a level playing field within the EU’s single market. Delays in addressing this issue since 2022 have prompted calls for urgent action from the new European Commission.
