EU Fines Meta €797.72 Million for Antitrust Violations
The European Commission has imposed a record fine of €797.72 million on Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for violating EU antitrust regulations. The commission accused Meta of unfairly linking its Facebook Marketplace service to its social network, disadvantaging competitors in the online classifieds market. Commissioner Margrethe Vestager stated that this practice forced users into regular exposure to Marketplace, potentially excluding rival services. This penalty reflects the Commission’s ongoing scrutiny of major tech companies, which has previously seen significant fines against Apple and Google for similar anti-competitive behaviors.
