Construction is underway for Europe’s largest battery storage project located at Coalburn in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The initiative aims to balance the electricity grid as the region shifts towards renewable energy, storing enough electricity to power three million homes. The facility will utilize excess power from wind farms and is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Developers Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners are progressing with the project in two phases, with the first phase expected to be operational later this year.
