Expert Warns of Biosecurity Failures Amid Livestock Disease Spread in Greece

Professor George Arsenos from Aristotle University highlights inadequate biosecurity measures among farmers as a key factor in the spread of livestock diseases, particularly in the Rodopi area of Northern Greece. He stresses the importance of preventing farmer interactions, vehicle disinfection, and proper clothing changes. With no public centers for animal reproduction in Greece, reliance on imports and a lack of border checks have exacerbated disease transmission. Additionally, a genetic improvement program involving 50 breeding units was halted due to an outbreak, leading to slaughter of infected animals.
