Trump’s nomination of Kash Patel, a critic of the FBI, to lead the agency has contributed to Wray’s decision. Wray, who has faced scrutiny during his tenure especially related to Trump’s legal issues, stated he aimed to minimize further controversy for the bureau. His resignation will lead to Patel’s appointment pending Senate approval, as FBI deputy director Paul Abbate temporarily takes over.
