First Severe Human Case of Avian Influenza Reported in the U.S.
On December 18, U.S. health authorities reported the first severe case of avian influenza in a human, with the patient hospitalized in Louisiana after contact with sick and dead birds on farms. Since April, 61 cases have been detected, all mild except for this one. Most cases involved farm workers exposed to sick poultry or dairy cows, with two cases remaining undetermined in Missouri and California.
