Florence Implements Measures to Curb Overtourism Amid Rising Visitor Numbers
Florence, Italy, is taking significant steps to address overtourism, including banning key boxes used by short-term rental owners and restricting tour guide equipment. With over 7.8 million tourists visiting in 2024 alone, local authorities, led by Mayor Sarah Funaro, aim to enhance quality of life for residents while retaining the city’s charm. The new 10-point plan also targets the use of informal transport vehicles and audio amplifiers to minimize disruptions in the UNESCO World Heritage site. These changes reflect a growing trend as other Italian cities, like Venice and Pompeii, adopt similar restrictions.
