France Expands Vaccination Efforts Against Contagious Sheep Disease

France has ordered an additional 2 million doses of the bluetongue vaccine to combat the rapidly spreading outbreak of serotype 3, announced Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard. With an existing stock of 11.7 million doses, the new order aims to enhance vaccination coverage. Genevard also revealed plans for an animal health conference in January 2025, focusing on collaborative strategies to address livestock diseases. The disease, non-transmissible to humans but harmful to sheep, has affected over 7,000 farms since its detection in August, prompting calls for a coordinated European research initiative for broader vaccine options.
