France Proposes Mandatory Enrichment of Flour with Folic Acid to Prevent Congenital Malformations
The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) recommends the mandatory enrichment of both white and whole wheat flour with folic acid to combat the insufficient Vitamin B9 intake among pregnant women, a key factor in preventing congenital malformations. This initiative follows World Health Organization guidelines and aims to ensure that women receive adequate folate before and during pregnancy. Currently, less than a third of expectant mothers begin folate supplementation early enough, prompting this new measure.
