France Reduces Climate Financing Amid Global Summit Preparations
As COP29 approaches in Baku, Azerbaijan, France announced a 5% decrease in its 2023 climate financing, totaling €7.2 billion for developing countries. Despite this reduction, France remains one of the world’s top contributors, focusing on adaptation to climate change. The funding primarily consists of loans and grants, with the French Development Agency managing much of it. France contributes 31% of the EU’s climate financing, significantly surpassing its 2009 commitment. The global climate goal of $100 billion annually has been exceeded, prompting countries to aim for more ambitious targets at the summit starting November 11.
